It's not really a good time, as warned. The smell is better with the man around, but the path is still a slog, and the whispers are loud, hissing and cruel, in the darkness. If he looks to the side, in either direction, he will be able to see shapes out there, slightly blacker things against the dark, that appear to be watching the two of them in their progress.
And there are things in the muck, trying to grab at his ankles, grasping, tugging to try and slow him down.
