It's a normal gold ring. There isn't even fancy script on it like a Tolkien knockoff.

But when he looks through it, he can see the outline of a door on the wall... but when he looks out of the ring, the door is gone.

It takes a bit of fumbling, since he has to be looking through the ring, or else the door disappears, but eventually it opens.
