The man only tilts his head slightly, not straightening out of his insouciant lounge, eyeing him with a long, unblinking stare. He does not yet answer.
As he approaches, the man still does not straighten out of his lounge, but he does look slightly more interested. There's a lot of the stairs, and when he makes it about halfway up, the man says,

Something about the way he says that is deeply self-satisfied.
"And having come here seeking her out, what do you intend, once you find her?"

But as he says it, he rises to stand. His feet don't quite touch the floor as he does.
"You have made it this far, though... unless you wish to challenge me properly?"

"Hardly," he says. "You would simply fall to ruin and fade away. It would be too much trouble for too little reward."
He snaps his fingers, which opens a portal of some sort.
"If you wish," he says, "then you may take your leap of faith and step through."
