They are perfectly normal looking doors! They've got little keycard locks next to them, though when he approaches any one, the light beeps from red to green. They don't appear to be actually locked.

He won't recognize any of the voices as individuals, though it's not unlike when, in a movie, people start whispering behind their hands at the appearance of a new kid in school. Some of them sound friendly enough, but there are definitely some who sound disdainful to outright mocking.
