As he approaches that podium, he can get the sense of a ghostly image of what should be there, between blinks. It's not actually there--he can know that for sure--but that is, without a doubt, the missing piece.

There are four doors up there! They are perfectly normal looking doors! They've got little keycard locks next to them, though when he approaches any one, the light beeps from red to green. They don't appear to be actually locked.
