[Swipes their hand through the empty space on one of those fast blinks to see if they touch anything]

It doesn't! It's like trying to swipe your hand through a hologram, just empty space and the sense of something that should be there, and is not.

Huh.

[knocking on the buzzing walls on their way to the steps]

With every knock, there's a buzzing sensation--like touching some sort of low (low) grade electrical field that gives a tiny shock back. Nothing painful, just a small bzzt! that barely stings.

At the top of the stairs are four doors. They are perfectly normal looking doors! They've got little keycard locks next to them, though when he approaches any one, the light beeps from red to green. They don't appear to be actually locked.
