[shakes her head, amused even as things pluck at her feet. she feels the drag of it, the little ways in which she has to exert more effort to keep pace as they travel upward.]

He does manage not to laugh this time, though he smiles, all sharp teeth. And then he stops, gesturing; in the dimness, the path obviously slants upwards, a steep climb.

"And here is where we must part ways. The end of my set territory is here. If you wish to speak to the King of Men, then you must make that final journey alone, as we all must! Perhaps he will be pleased to see you, and perhaps he will not, but your path only lies forward! Fare well!"

The remaining way seems to take an inordinate amount of time--hours? months? It's hard to say. The air is still cleaner than it was, but there are the sounds of voices again--louder now, more openly hostile. She can make out words now, in the mess:

"--no! Stop! No, no, no, no, no... I haven't even accomplished anything yet--!"

"--I can't stand it. I spent every one of those thousand and one nights wishing for nothing more than to not die. Every fiber of my being is terrified of death!"

"This... This can't be how I die! I was... I was going to destroy...this entire world...!!!"

They're getting louder. There are so many of them.

But at the end, there is a light.
